UN CUADRO: El matrimonio Arnolfini

Mi cuadro preferido es éste: El matrimonio Arnolfini, de Jan van Eyck.

Se pintó en Brujas (que era por aquel entonces el enclave comercial más importante del norte de Europa) en el año 1434.

El matrimonio del cuadro es un exponente de la riqueza en Brujas; sus ropas evidencian que se trata de una pareja adinerada.

El pintor ha situado casi en el centro del cuadro las manos de los dos protagonistas. En la época de Van Eyck, darse las manos y hacer un juramento (como realiza el hombre) eran indicios claros de boda. En el siglo XV no era necesario ni sacerdote ni testigos para formar un matrimonio cristiano y civil: el acto se podía realizar en cualquier parte y, a la mañana siguiente, los esposos acudían juntos a misa para, con ese acto, hacer público su enlace.

Un error muy común al observar El matrimonio Arnolfini es suponer que la mujer está embarazada: el vientre abultado representa el ideal de belleza del gótico tardío en el que la gran cantidad de tela en la confección de los vestidos femeninos estaba muy de moda. Esto hacía que fuese difícil distinguir a las mujeres embarazadas de las que no lo estaban.

La mayoría de los objetos que se integraron en este cuadro encierran un significado simbólico: el perrito entre los esposos indica bienestar y fidelidad; los zuecos delante del marido evidencian que no pertenecía a la aristocracia; el espejo inmaculado y las cuentas transparentes del rosario colgado en la pared hacen referencia a la pureza de la mujer; el marco del espejo está adornado con diez medallones que representan las estaciones del Via Crucis,...

No quiero alargarme pero en esta pintura hay muchos más detalles que la convierten en una obra fascinante que, además de deleitar la vista, funcionan como testimonio gráfico de la vida en Brujas en la Alta Edad Media.

My favourite picture is this: The Arnolfini Marriage by Jan Van Eyck.

It was painted in Bruges (which was at that time the most important commerce enclave in northern Europe) in 1434.

The marriage of the table is an exponent of wealth in Bruges; their clothes show this is a wealthy couple.

The painter has placed almost in the center of the picture the hands of the two protagonists.  At the time of Van Eyck, to be hand in hand  and to take an oath (as the man is doing) were clear indication of wedding. In the fifteenth century was not neccesary priest or witnesses to form a christian and civil marriage: the act could be performed anywhere and the next morning the couple went together to church for, with this act, make public their marriage.

A common mistake when looking at The Arnolfini Marriage is to assume that the woman is pregnant: the bulging belly was the ideal of beauty in the late gothic, when the large amount of  material in the manufacture of women´s dress was very fashionable. This made difficult to tell when a woman was pregnant or not.

Most of the objects that were included in this painting contain a symbolic meaning: the puppy between the spouses shows well-being and fidelity; the clogs in front of the husband evidence that he didn´t belong to aristrocracy; the spotless mirror and the transparent beads of the rosary hanging on a wall refer to the purity of the woman; the mirror frame is embellished with ten medallions representing the Stations of the Cross...

I don´t want to drag out but in this painting there are many more details that make it a fascinating work that delight the eye as well as work as graphic testimony of the living in Bruges in the Middle Ages.

What you learn sometimes looking at a picture!
